ICRW: Turning Point

Award Category
Drupal Version
Brief Overview

Over 60 million girls are forced into unwanted marriages. Most child brides contract AIDS and are held forever in poverty and with no education tied to men often twice their age. The leading cause of death for adolescent girls worldwide is pregnancy. If trends continue 148 Million more girls will suffer this tragic human rights offense in the next decade.

The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) launched its Turning Point campaign in November 2012. The campaign advocates for the United States becoming more involved in curbing child marriage. ICRW is working with the US Congress and the administration to raise the profile of this issue and to bring more national and international support to ending the harmful practice of child marriage.

Key Modules, Theme, and Distribution Used

Why these Modules, Theme, and Distribution were Chosen

Both Page Wrappers and fundraising form on the Turning Point site are powered by the Springboard Drupal distribution.

The Turning Point site heavily utilizes the Springboard Page Wrappers module for its look and feel. By using Page Wrappers, the site avoids needing to have a separate theme for the Turning Point site. Each page wrapper includes HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
The landing page of the campaign site uses Views to display a list of facts, as well as to display a block with a list of people empowered by the campaign. The helpful Imagecache module is used to resize images throughout the site.

Jackson River
Jackson River specializes in building online platforms for nonprofits using Drupal and Salesforce. We created Springboard - a fully-featured Drupal and Salesforce powered fundraising platform - to meet our clients fundraising, advocacy, and marketing needs.
Why Drupal Was Chosen
Given the small size of the Turning Point site, at first Jackson River considered building it as a static site. However, since the main ICRW site is in Drupal, it made more sense to take advantage of the powers of the Drupal and the Springboard distribution. Additionally, the ICRW staff were already familiar with how to create rich content through the Drupal administrative system and it made sense to take advantage of popular Drupal modules like Views and filefield.
Describe the Project (Goals, Requirements, and Outcome)

The goal of the project was to quickly and affordably create a site site for the Turning Point campaign. ICRW wanted the site to have a clean, inviting design, and a site organization that made both learning about child marriage and donating to the campaign simple.

From the time it launched, the campaign site has consistently generated donations each month.
